For a long time I had been thinking about writing a book on atomic and nuclear physics, but I was never able to find the time. Then one of my friends, who knew that I had been planning this for a long time, encouraged me. That was enough motivation to get started! A pdf document of 14 pages with atomic and nuclear physics by ab gupta is available here: http://www.scribd. com/doc/13998499/atomic-and-nuclear-physics-ab-gupta EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK: ABHAY BHUSHAN GUPTA Atomic and Nuclear Physics. Then one of my friends, who knew that I had been planning this for a long time, encouraged me. That was enough motivation to get started! The first draft of the book was completed in March 1994. A few months later, when I sat down to read through it again, I realized that the manuscript was too large for private circulation and proposed publishing it with Cambridge University Press (CUP). CUP approved the idea and I was able to give a final shape to the text in a few months. The book was published by CUP in 1995. After it came out, I received several requests for permission to make photocopies of it, but felt reluctant to allow this because of the cost involved. However, since the publication of the book is now more than two years old, I have decided that it can be made available to students for private study under certain conditions. This book has been written primarily for students preparing for their examinations in physics; it may also be useful to others who are not studying physics but would like an introduction into atomic and nuclear physics. The illustrations are self-explanatory. However, a part of the book covers topics on which students have been demanding answers from me from time to time. In my opinion, it is important to have a general idea about the structure of atoms and their constituents as well as about their interactions with each other and with electromagnetic radiation before one undertakes a study of physical laws related to atomic and nuclear systems. A study of these physical laws by itself can lead one into complex mathematical calculations that require advanced knowledge in the field. However, if we start with an introduction to these systems, we can better appreciate the various mathematical developments and be able to relate them to the physical world. cfa1e77820
